Bill is a dedicated husband who didn’t want his wife, Marjorie, to be placed in a nursing home because of her Alzheimer’s disease. However, but being her round-the-clock caregiver was becoming increasingly stressful. Luckily, Bill learned about the Southwest DayElders program. The DayElders program offers care and a variety of activities for older adults, age 55 or more, who typically have limitations of mobility, stamina and/or cognitive functioning.
Volunteers of America’s Caregiver Support Services arranged for Marjorie to attend DayElders two days a week, while Southwest Center’s social worker helped Bill apply for county assistance. Once Bill was approved for county funding, Marjorie began attending DayElders four days a week.
When Marjorie first started attending the program, she was anxious when Bill left. She would often stand watch at the window waiting for his return. Bill indicated that Marjorie always wanted him in her sight even at home. Over time, Marjorie became more comfortable with the DayElders program and began engaging with others more frequently. Today, Marjorie enjoys singing gospel hymns, exercising, and going on outings with the DayElders group. She has attended a number of restaurant field trips and likes to bring home a special treat for her husband, Bill. “I always have a good time when I’m here,” Marjorie said with a smile.
Both Marjorie and Bill have benefited from the DayElders program. While Marjorie receives quality care and takes part in a variety of activities she enjoys, Bill receives a well-deserved break from caregiving. What’s more, Bill reports that Marjorie is more relaxed at home and is able to let him go into other rooms without becoming anxious.
