Dialectical Behavior Therapy:

DBT Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an empirically researched psychotherapeutic treatment employing cognitive and behavioral principles.  DBT is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy specifically designed to treat adolescents with patterns of emotional dysregulation who meet criteria for multiple diagnosis including Major Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and also exhibit Axis II traits or have an emerging Borderline Personality Disorder.

DBT Individual Therapy:

The adolescent begins our program with weekly DBT Individual Therapy for orientation, to complete a comprehensive evaluation, and to secure a DBT Personal Agreement Contract that demonstrates commitment to the program.  Therapy identifies prioritized and sequenced behavioral targets that are life threatening, therapy interfering and/or quality of life directed which are treated with DBT interventions, use of diary cards, and generalization of learning for situation specific behaviors.

DBT Multi-Family Skills Group:

The adolescent and at least one parent (or guardian) meets weekly for a two-hour, multi-family skills training group, which includes behavioral skills training of the four modules from the Miller, Rathus, Landsman & Linehan Model adapted from Marsha Linehan’s Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder, Guilford Press, 1993.  The 24-week skills training includes weekly homework, homework review, generalization of skills to new situations, and is a well-maintained, structured, goal directed learning environment. To participate in this portion of the program, participants must be referred by one of Volunteers of America of Minnesota DBT Therapists to our consultation group for consideration.
