NEWS: Our sponsored charter school, Metro Deaf School-Minnesota North Star Academy (pictured to the left) placed second in the Midwest Regional Academic Bowl competition hosted by Gallaudet University at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf during the first weekend of February.The win will allow them to advance to the national championship games to be held at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC in April. ARTICLE: Corrections Today magazine (October 2009 issue), featured an article written by Bill Nelson, Director of our Correctional programs entitled, “A Treatment Assisted Recovery Model for Victims of Prostitution and Trafficking” which describes the deep psychological issues associated with prostitution, as well as a new approach to treatment and recovery of prostitutes. EVENT: Students from our SALT High School’s Eco-Arts & Creative Writing classes created the “Write Me Up!” shanty for this year’s Art Shanty Projects (ASP) exhibition. It's hard to pass up an ice house with chalkboard exterior or surface covered in magnetic letters without making a contribution! <Read their blog> The ASP exhibition is part sculpture park & part social experiment inspired by traditional ice fishing houses. The event is located on Medicine Lake in Plymouth, MN. Open weekends 10am-5pm thru February 7. <Learn more about the Art Shanty Projects>

ADOPT A FAMILY 2009 RESULTS: More than 2,500 people were “adopted” this year, up from about 1,900 last year, and included low-income families, at-risk youth and foster children, isolated older adults, and persons with special needs and disabilities for holiday gift giving. Read More>
NEW PUBLICATION: Take a peek at VOA Perspectives, a quarterly publication written by the level-seven writing students of our Evening Adult High School Diploma Program. The program offers English language learners, age 16 and older, the opportunity to acquire English skills and earn a high school diploma.
